Winnington Park Cricket Club
Blown Over By
Steamy
Social secretary
Paul Winder has been rapidly acquiring fans for his performances this season and
now has the ability to pull a crowd to the levels that David Beckham, Freddie
Flintoff and Kendol Richardson could only dream of. Here are a few
incidents that have made him a crowd favourite at Winnington and
across the county:
Pre
Season: Makes a confident
claim that he will score 500 3rdXI runs this season, the result was a £100 bet
and the interest in the Steamer grows
20.05.07 Winder arrives at Timperley, most thought
he had got lost on his way to Stretton, but he had received a last minute call
up for the 1st XI and shows the whole team up by being the most
economical bowler and picking up a wicket in the process (and was unlucky not
to have more).
26.05.07
The week after he is
included in the 2nd XI team who travelled to title challengers
Sale. All the batsmen except McKeown struggled on a difficult wicket, but
after playing the first ball bad confidently, ‘Steamy’ strikes second ball as
he crashes the ball through mid-wicket in what must be the shot of the
season. The hefty blow was greeted by cheers from the on looking crowd
and a look of disbelief from the Sale bowler.
03.06.07 Alsager 4ths were unlucky to be on the receiving end of the
full steamy effect as he really comes into his own in senior cricket as he
comes in near the end of the innings to steer his team to victory thanks to
some trademark shot selection which left the opposition reeling, it was an
innings that some of us were unfortunate enough to miss out on, the moral of
this story is to never miss a game when Paul Winder is in the playing arena
17.06.07 The crowd puller does his job well in attracting a large
number of fans to Tattenhall to witness his best innings of the season of an
unbeaten 53 which included many hefty blows including a class straight drive
over the bowlers head for a one bounce 4 into the sightscreens.
25.06.07 Winnington Rec witnessed a near sell out crowd as a large
number of 1st and 2nd XI players as well as many more
admirers were in attendance. There
is a rumour that programmes will be sold at future games such is the interest
in the 3rd XI. Winder
does not reach the heights of previous weeks scoring 13 but did provide a well
played 4 and a big 6 which brought the crowd to their feet.
22.06.07 Distaster strikes as Winder suffers a painful injury just as
he began to get hold of the bowling.
Who knows how long it will be before we see the star attraction in
action again?
