Winnington Park's 1st XI ended a run of five consecutive defeats with a dramatic victory over Romiley at The Recreation Ground on Saturday.
Chasing 180 for victory, Romiley were cruising at 95-0 before James Hendry took a diving catch off the bowling of Tom Speak (1-42) to dismiss Rick Holt (66). On a slow turning pitch, Park captain Mike Johns turned to his spin bowlers; Michael Dunning (4-46) and Jonathan Wales (5-24), with the pair taking the remaining nine Romiley wickets for just 55 runs.
Earlier in the day Johns had won the toss and elected to bat. Despite the loss of an early wicket, the decision was a good one, with James Hendry (62) and Jonathan Wales (36) putting on 86 for the second wicket. Contributions from Robert Begbie (17) and Michael Dunning (14) brought Park within reach of 180 and maximum batting points. Although the home side fell agonisingly short of this, all is forgotten, with Winnington registering their third victory of the season.
Mike Johns said; "It was a superb team performance. 179 proved to be a very good score on that track, and we showed great fight in the field to drag the game back our way. This victory fills us with confidence going into next week's match at Oakmere"
