Winnington Park first XI kicked off the 2013 season with defeat at TACS
Cheshire Cricket League Division 1 newcomers Romiley.
Upon losing the toss, the Northwich based side were invited to bat first on a
bowler friendly wicket.
Greg McKeown and captain James Hendry opened up, looking to continue the
success they shared in 2012. Unfortunately today was not Hendry's day, as he was
dismissed in the fourth over by James Barber.
McKeown (34) grafted as the rest of the top order struggled with the
conditions, and it was only once he was dismissed that Jonathan Wales (52) was
able to open up, and play a mature innings to see Winnington to a respectable
total of 109 all out.
With conditions remaining favourable for bowlers, Park knew they were in the
game. And having reduced Romiley to 11-4, they knew it more than ever. New
signing Matthew Bebbington (2-49) and James Woolley (1-17) caused the early
damage, assisted by Robert Begbie (1-0) who had to leave the field injured after
bowling just two deliveries.
Romiley's James Holt (24) showed some fight, but Hendry used his change
bowlers well, with Wales (3-28) and Daniel Ainsworth (1-15) putting Park back
on top, leaving the hosts 78-8, still 32 runs short.
Unfortunately Winnington were unable to force the victory as a good knock
from Jack Kelly (40*) proved the difference between the sides, and saw Romiley
to a two wicket victory.
Winnington captain James Hendry had this to say following the game; "You
won't see a better low scoring game than that. We're obviously disappointed to
lose, but there are many positives to take from today. It's a long season and
tomorrow we will begin planning for the home game against Oakmere next
Saturday".
Romiley win by two wickets.
