Winnington Park will go into the final game of the 2013 season with a fighting chance of survival, having secured eight valuable points away to Hale Barns at the weekend.
Batting first, Hale Barns managed to total 168-9 on a testing wicket. Thomas Speak (3-41) and
Jonathan Wales (4-37) were the pick of the bowlers, as the Winnington attack were backed up by
some good fielding.
Stand-in captain James Hendry (18) was confident of chasing down the target and he will have
been increasingly confident with his team 65-3 at the drinks break.
However, aggressive bowling from Hale Barns' overseas player Andrew Davidson (5-31) restricted
the visitors to just 113-9 from their 45 overs. Ian Woodcock (40) top scoring for Winnington.
With Mere unlikely to be promoted from Division 2, Winnington will need to make up an 11 point
deficit on eleventh placed Prestbury to give them any chance of remaining in the TACS Cheshire
Cricket League Division 1.
Winnington captain James Hendry said; "In the four years I've been at Winnington Park, we've
never had a dull season. This one has been no different, and we will go into next week's game
at Chester County Officers confident of the victory we need to give ourselves the best possible
chance of retaining our Division 1 status".
