Cricket League Division C, as they followed up an opening day draw against
Stockport Trinity with a win away at Chelford.
Chelford recorded a good three-wicket win at Pott Shrigley in their first
game and would have been confident entering Saturday’s match as Park made the
15-mile trip from Northwich.
Captain Phil Amatiello won the toss and elected to bowl, and Park got off to
a good start. Openers Stu Moniz (1-37) and Bailey Metzinger (1-16) each took an
early wicket to leave Chelford 30-2, but opening batsman Mitchell and number
four Malik solidified the innings from there.
At the drinks break Chelford had moved on into the 80s and Park needed a
wicket quickly. The breakthrough finally came from Ash Houghton when he
dismissed Malik for 33, then Mitchell for 59, and the rest of Chelford’s line-up
Houghton went on to take 4-28 in his 12 overs, bowling in tandem with Sam
Barnes who took 4-14 – including two wickets in two balls, the second of which a
superb diving catch off his own bowling.
Chelford were all out on 135, and Park’s batsmen played patient, sensible
cricket as they knocked off the runs with more than eight overs remaining.
There were solid contributions from many of Winnington’s batsmen: Neil Powell
top scored with 29, Sam Barnes (19), Josh Tench (15), Tom Silvester (10) and the
unbeaten partnership of Sam Speak (17*) and Stu Moniz (10*) saw Park comfortably
home as they earned 20 points for the four-wicket victory.
