Chester County Officers 1XI Vs WPCC 1XI

Cheshire Cricket
Winnington Park will play their cricket in Divsion 2 of the TACS Cheshire Cricket League in 2014,
having missed out on the final day victory that would have seen them retain their Division 1 status.
The Park batsmen did well to score 152 on a wet wicket, with contributions coming from a number
of the top order.

As Winnington reduced Chester County Officers to 107-7, the news came through that Prestbury
had collected five points from their match against Mobberley, and victory would see the Northwich
based side remain in Division 1.
Unfortunately it wasn't to be, as a 46 run partnership saw CCO to  victory with less than two overs to
spare.

In reflection, Park captain Mike Johns was philosophical; "I cannot fault any of our players for effort
this season. It's been difficult with a number of key players unavailable and some of our more
established players struggling with consistency".
He added; "This is not a situation which is new to us. We were relegated from Division 1 in 2010,
and bounced back at the first attempt. Our job is to repeat that, and preparation for 2014 starts
immediately".

Cheshire Cricket report
Winnington Park will go into the final game of the 2013 season with a fighting chance of survival, having secured eight valuable points away to Hale Barns at the weekend.

Batting first, Hale Barns managed to total 168-9 on a testing wicket. Thomas Speak (3-41) and
Jonathan Wales (4-37) were the pick of the bowlers, as the Winnington attack were backed up by
some good fielding.

Stand-in captain James Hendry (18) was confident of chasing down the target and he will have
been increasingly confident with his team 65-3 at the drinks break.

However, aggressive bowling from Hale Barns' overseas player Andrew Davidson (5-31) restricted
the visitors to just 113-9 from their 45 overs. Ian Woodcock (40) top scoring for Winnington.
With Mere unlikely to be promoted from Division 2, Winnington will need to make up an 11 point
deficit on eleventh placed Prestbury to give them any chance of remaining in the TACS Cheshire
Cricket League Division 1.

Winnington captain James Hendry said; "In the four years I've been at Winnington Park, we've
never had a dull season. This one has been no different, and we will go into next week's game
at Chester County Officers confident of the victory we need to give ourselves the best possible
chance of retaining our Division 1 status".

Cheshire Cricket
In their biggest game of the season so far, Winnington Park’s 2nd XI beat Pott Shrigley by three wickets to move in to second place in the TACS Partnership Cheshire Cricket League Division C with just one game to go.

Park were third, four points behind Shrigley before play, making the game a must-win for both teams. Shrigley won the toss and elected to bat in an effort to gain double batting points.
Winnington’s bowling attack was depleted - with Phill Amatiello playing in the 1st XI and no spin option available – but they had enough to bowl their opponents out for 114.

Stu Moniz took 4-20 from his 15 overs, taking him to a huge 54 wickets this season, he needs four more next week to break the league record.
Bailey Metzinger (2-31) and James Hanson (2-49) also contributed as well as Ben Birchenhall (1-7) taking a wicket on his debut. Only Matt Tarr (44) provided much resistance for Shrigley.

Stand-in captain Alec Butcher and Stu Moniz opened the batting and got off to a superb start, Park reached 77 before the first wicket fell – Moniz bowled after a knock of 41 that included seven fours.
Butcher hit 37 from 56 balls but he was out soon after as Park began to lose wickets rapidly. Matherson took four and Dawson took three late on but Winnington held on, Alan Stone hitting the winning four in a nervy finish.

Winnington are now 10 points clear in second place, they meet Winsford on Saturday knowing a win will secure promotion back to Division B.

Runcorn 1XI Vs WPCC 1XI

Winnington Park will find it difficult to avoid the drop to Division 2 of the
TACS Cheshire Cricket League having collected one point from their trip to fellow strugglers Runcorn on Saturday.

The defeat makes it four in the last five games for Mike Johns' men, and is the second week  in a row they've been bowled out for under a hundred.

Put in to bat, Park were under immediate pressure from the experienced bowling partnership of Steven Sheakey (6-24) and Jamie Hill (2-12). Runcorn captain Sheakey claimed six of the top eight Park batsman, as only one managed to reach double figures.

The late arriving Ian Woodcock (16 not out) was able to add some respectability to Winnington's total, but the damage had already been done, and they were dismissed for just 72.

Park looked like collecting no points for a second consecutive week, but aided by an excellent catch from Alec Butcher, Rob Begbie (1-29) was able to claim a wicket, and get Park on the board.

Ryan Beech (24 not out) and Matthew Keenan (25 not out) were able to see Runcorn home in just 13 overs. The result leaves Winnington 54 points from safety with just five games to go.

TACS Cricket League
Winnington Park’s 2nd XI’s eight-match unbeaten run came to end on Saturday as they fell to a 103 run defeat to top of the table Langley.

Langley captain Matt Barber won the toss and elected to bat, but his side made a poor start when Bailey Metzinger had Jason Hanaghan caught behind for 1. From there though the rest of Langley’s top order batted well, Dominic Moore (49), Rick Laughton (48) and Nicholas Berzins (40) all made good contributions as Park’s bowlers struggled.

Langley finished on 188-5, Metzinger was the pick of the Winnington attack as he took 3-41 from his 12 overs with the other two wickets being taken by Stu Moniz (1-43) and James Hanson (1-43).

It was two new players – Darren Falland and Kev Vernall – who were the only ones to impress with the bat as Park limped to 85 all out. Falland batted at three and made 24 from 40 balls, but it was Vernall coming in at five who top scored with an innings of 33 that included five fours and one six. They were the only two batsmen to reach double figures as Jason Hanaghan ripped through the Park line-up, taking 7-34 from his 14.5 overs.

Winnington earned three points for the loss which keeps them in second place in the TACS Partnership Cheshire Cricket League Division C, three points ahead of Sandbach in third.

WPCC 1XI Vs Upton 1XI

Saturday proved to be a day to forget for Winnington Park 1st XI, as they came away with no points from their home match against Upton.

With Park 30 points from safety in the TACS Cheshire Cricket League Division 1, captain Mike Johns elected to bat first on a green wicket.

However, it was a combination of poor decision making and quality bowling that saw the home side dismissed for just 96 runs. Jonathan Wales (24) and Greg McKeown (25 not out) offered the only resistance as the experienced Gary Dixon (5-37) removed the Park top order.

Upton made short work of their target with Alex Cotter (81no, off 69 balls) hitting the Park bowlers to all parts of the ground. The Northwich based side were unable to take any of the chances they created, and despite Runcorn losing to Hale Barns, Winnington now find themselves 35 points from safety with just six games to go.

Park captain Mike Johns said; "Following today's result, we find ourselves deep in the relegation zone. However, next week we travel to Runcorn, a team we beat earlier in the season. If we can beat them again, who knows what can happen between now and the end of the season".

WPCC 3XI Vs Neston 5XI

Winnington Park 3XI failed to build on a winning draw at Tattenhall the previous week, as Neston’s 5th XI brushed them aside with ease at the Recreation Ground.

Batting first, only captain Paul Morris (42) and Joe Paterson (51) managed to reach double figures for the Northwich side in a disappointing performance.

Morris had got the innings off to a flying start by attacking the young opening bowlers, however once he was trapped lbw by the impressive Dom Smith (4-10), the run rate dropped significantly.

Batsmen continued to fall for single figures around number five batsman Paterson, who played freely for his first ever half-century, which included two sixes.

Resilience from Bailey Metzinger (5), James Hanson (3) and Justin Andrews (0*) helped Park reach 122 all out when Paterson was caught and bowled by Elliot Kirkbride-Wright.

Despite positive opening spells with the ball from Metzinger (0-20) and Hanson (1-30), Neston rallied against the off-spin of Tom Woolley, Paterson and Morris to reach their target inside 22 overs.
Capitalising on the short leg-side boundary, Guy Reeve (50*) and Dan Meredith (70*) dispatched several deliveries into the works, much to the dismay of bowler Morris, to secure the victory.

Ashley travel to mid-Cheshire next week, and Winnington will be hoping to get back to winning ways to make their survival in the Cheshire County Cricket League Division 3 absolutely certain.

Prestbury 1XI Vs WPCC 1XI

Winnington Park will look back on missed opportunities having come away with just 11 points from their visit to bottom of the table Prestbury.

Having lost the toss Park were put under immediate pressure with Livesley (27) chancing his arm to get the home side off to a swift start.

This mentality continued as Prestbury fell from 44-0 to 92-6. An inexperienced top order played with no fear, but little intelligence as Winnington's spin bowlers Michael Dunning (3-66) and Jonathan Wales (4-64) left the home side on 127-8 after just 28 overs. However, the power shifted, as the experienced Kirkland (46 not out) put together an 88 run partnership with Bateman (42 not out) to see the home side to 215-8 at the end of their 45 overs.

Ian Woodcock (73) batted with patience, but was offered little support as the Park fell from 83-1 to 135-7. It was only an aggressive knock from Daniel Ainsworth (44 off 29 balls) that allowed Park to reach maximum batting points, ending their innings on 190-9.

The losing draw leaves Park 25 points adrift of safety going into next weekend's match against third placed Upton.

Tattenhall 3XI Vs WPCC 3XI

Rob Powell’s first five-wicket haul of his career helped Winnington Park’s 3rd XI to a winning draw away at Tattenhall.

Park captain Paul Morris won the toss and elected to bat, and Tattenhall got off to a good start as Henry Dobson had opener Tom Woolley caught behind for a duck. Morris steadied the innings with a knock of 25 but it was the partnership of Jonny Reissing (32) and Mark Stone (34) that was crucial to Winnington’s innings. Joe Paterson came in at seven to hit a good, unbeaten 20 – and there were cameos for Sam Speak (12) and Rob Powell (9) as Park finished on 170-8, Tattenhall’s Ryan Spann doing most of the damage with figures of 4-45.

Tattenhall started their innings well, the top three of Henry Dobson (20), Josh Harding (32) and Ewan Drake (38) all impressed but after Sam Barnes (1-29) and Rob Powell combined to take their wickets, the rest of their line-up struggled.

After claiming the wickets of Harding and Drake, Powell took another three in a row as he ripped through Tattenhall’s middle order to finish with figures of 5-13 from nine overs.
Joe Paterson (1-36) and Paul Morris (1-2) each claimed a wicket – as well as a Sam Barnes run out – to leave the hosts nine wickets down. But Park couldn’t claim the final wicket as an injured Dan Gibbon successfully blocked out the final over. Winnington claimed 13 points for the draw which moves them up to fourth in the 3rd XI Division Three West on 111 points.

WPCC 1XI Vs Northwich 1XI

Picture
Northwich 1st XI beat local rivals Winnington Park on Saturday, but not without a scare in a hard fought battle at The Recreation Ground.

Despite inconsistency with the bat so far this season, Park captain Mike Johns had no hesitation in choosing to bat on a humid day.

A steady start allowed Ben Chaloner (41) and Pete Evans (31) to accelerate through the middle of the innings. However, both were dismissed in unfortunate circumstances, allowing Northwich to take control through Mark Walker (3-37) and James Plant (4-36).

The home side knew they were under par with a total of 151, but a spirited bowling and fielding performance allowed Park to put a youthful Northwich team under pressure. Seemingly cruising to victory at 78-1, Northwich slipped to 125-6. It was only the experienced Walker (34no) who found batting easy as Winnington put pressure on the Northwich middle order. Jonathan Wales (3-54) was the pick of the Winnington bowlers.

Eventually Northwich reached their target with six overs to spare, allowing them to establish themselves at the top of the TACS Cheshire Cricket League Division 1
