Winnington Park announced two big role changes at the recent AGM and both the club’s new chairman – Dave Barnes – and new First Team captain – Alec Butcher – are excited by the challenge of moving the club forward.

Dave Barnes takes over the chairman role from Ian Johns who had held the role since 2010, but has since stepped down due to work commitments, but will still continue as club president.

As the father of young First Team player Sam Barnes, Dave has been involved with the club for a number of years now, from junior level to senior level, and he is focused on both sections of the club in his new role.

“We need to build on the consolidation of last season and look to move the club forward,” Dave said. “We will also build on the great work of the junior section and continue to grow the club.

“It will be difficult to follow Ian but hopefully I can bring some different ideas to the fore, although I believe it is just as important to support those already in place on the committee.”

After Mike Johns’ departure as First Team captain, last year’s Second Team skipper Alec Butcher will take the reigns and look to improve on last season’s ninth-place finish.

23-year-old Butcher was delighted to be offered the role, and having been involved with the club from an early age, spoke of how much it meant to him.

“I was extremely proud to be offered the opportunity to captain the First Team this year. The history of the club, which seems now even greater than what I remember from my childhood, means a great deal to me.

“This coming year is an exciting prospect, we have many young players who grew in to their roles towards the end of last season, promised to make the next step and began to really assert themselves on a regular basis.”
