Widnes’ Danny Moore, 8-37

on losing side at Bowdon

WIDNES’ 20 year-old seamer Danny Moore produced the best figures of his young career with 8-37 off 17.3 overs to help rout Bowdon for 92 in an ECB Premier League game at South Downs Road.  It was to be in vain.

Bowdon were 42-7 at one stage before skipper Steve Bramhall’s doughty 28 earned his side’s innings some respectability.  That effort was to prove crucial after tea when it was Widnes’ turn to struggle on a low, slow, green pitch.  With Tony Hurdley and Luke McCoy joint top-scoring with 12, Widnes were bowled out for 77, losing by 15 runs as former Dorset seamer Rupert Kitzinger, 5-12 off 11 accurate overs – and his club  - continued their flying start.

Umpire Geoff Wellsteed reports: “What a match!  Of 105 overs bowled, there were 38 maidens”.

Alderley Edge are the new leaders after despatching the division’s other 100 per centers Chester Boughton Hall at Moss Lane.  Chester were bowled out for 93 in 39 overs, Jim Gillson 27, Jason Whittaker 4-41, with Lancashire leg-spinner Simon Marshall taking a useful 2-9 on debut after joining from Neston. Alderley had the match won inside 14 overs with Mark Currie (35) the only batsman dismissed. Alan Day was not out on 34 and Sohail Rauf on 20.

Champions Oulton Park ensured that Hyde’s poor start continued with a comfortable six wickets win at Werneth Low after the home side had declared on 180-9, on a near-perfect pitch, Josh Farmer 32.  Oulton elevated 17 year-old left-arm spinner Craig Williamson from the 2nd XI and he repaid the selectors with a fine 5-43 return.  After the tea break, Jonny Kettle led the way with 61, aided by Nathan Dumelow 50 not out and Ben Spendlove 48.

Oulton Park host Alderley Edge in the Match of the Day next Saturday.

Smith, Hurst in 167 stand for Neston

Neston registered an impressive 129 runs victory at Heaton Mersey, who are struggling to come to terms with the quality of premiership cricket  - especially now promising young fast bowler Jonny Simpson has taken a Saturday job.  For the Parkgate side, Aussie Jack Smith (136) and the League’s 2007 Young Player David Hurst (97) enjoyed a third wicket stand worth 167 in a tally of 284-4. ‘Mersey were all out for 155 in reply, Waqar Rashid 38, Chris Finegan 3-25.

The highest individual score of the premiership season was posted by Nantwich’s impressive Queensland all-rounder Glen Batticiotto with a magnificent unbeaten 151 in a declared tally of 263-6, at Toft, enjoying a century plus stand with Chris Simpson, 70, while fellow Aussie Joshua Bean took 3-62.  Toft closed with their last pair together, Nigel Muirhead contributing a dogged 46 not out.  Chris Hampshire continued his productive start to the season with 3-44 off 21 overs for the Dabbers.

Urmston’s first victory came at the expense of Macclesfield at Moorside road, where paceman Kurt Edginton -  now nearing the veteran stage - produced the superb figures of 19-8-34-7.  A compact 33 not out from number eight batsman Neil Lomax saw the Urms home by four wickets chasing only 114, of which Craig Melrose, at nine, scored 39.

PICK OF WEEK.  Batting – Glen Batticiotto (Nantwich) 151no v Toft; Bowling – Danny Moore (Widnes) 8-37 v Bowdon.

Problems at Bramhall

THREE weeks of the season gone and still no 1st or 2nd XI cricket has been played at Bramhall, where the outfield remains waterlogged.

Saturday’s Division One game at Church Lane against Christleton was the second senior match to be called off, the captains agreeing at 1.15 p.m. that the outfield and bowlers’ run up areas were unplayable. Bramhall’s plight after a wet April is clear, to the dismay of groundsman Richard Cragg, who will be hoping for some solid fine weather this week.

All other games in the division were played, producing three wins and two draws.

Uoton enjoyed a comfortable success at home to Wirral rivals Birkenhead Park after bowling then out for 108, Zia ur Rehman 53. Off-spinner Ross Dixon 5-11 was helped by another 16 year-old in wicket-keeper Tom Marsland, who claimed a catch and three stumpings. With 58 from Aussie Adam Watson, Upton went on to win by six wickets.

Poynton bowled Cheadle out for 68 at Kingsway, Simon Turner including a hat-trick in his 5-12 return, while Damien Thompson took 4-24. Poynton won by seven wickets.

Didsbury outplayed Warrington at Wilmslow road, but had to be content with a 14-6 points draw. D. Morgan (86) and M. Fisher (64) enjoyed a partnership worth 137 in Didsbury’s declared tallty of 210-4.  Warrington, who retain the divisional lead, replied with 147-7, James Hughes 73. Skipper Paul Sperring added a 3-24 return to his useful unbeaten 38 before tea.

Timperley shaded the draw points 12-9 against Cheadle Hulme at Stockport road in a game between two teams who looked as though they were acutely short of batting practice in the nets.  Put in, Timperley opened up with a 93 from Tom Twiney (46) and Mark Leathley (44) before collapsing to 119-6, then closing on 173, Ewan McCray 5-72. Cheadle Hulme got as far as 148-7, Mark Maddocks 3-53.  An impressive wicket-keeping and batting performance came from the Grove Park side’s 15 year-old James Durham, who is in the Derbyshire Under15 squad.

Over 40s fixtures begin

OVER 40s section fixtures begin on Wednesday, May 7th in three divisions.

Bramhall plan to observe a minute’s silence prior to their game at Sale in memory of the late long-serving John North, who founded Veterans cricket in 1983.

Under a new regulation, cancelled games may be re-arranged within 14 days by mutual agreement as long as no other League fixture is involved, in which case the Competition Secretary must be informed. Clubs who wish to vary the date of a fixture to another day in the same week should also inform the Competition Secretary in advance.

As fixtures in the third week clash with the European Champions Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester United in Moscow  on May 21st, clubs may wish to re-arrange

THIS WEEK’S GAMES (6.15 p.m.)

West Division: Barnton v Davenham; Chester Boughton Hall v Grappenhall; Irby v Upton; Nantwich Cavaliers v Warrington; Tattenhall Wreckers v Christleton.

East Division l: Bowdon v Mobberley; Marple v Alderley Edge Wizards; Timperley v Urmston; Toft v Poynton Legends.

East Division 2: Bowdon Vale v Cheadle Hulme; Cheadle v Romiley ; Macclesfield v Brooklands; Sale v Bramhall.  Open: Bredbury St. Mark’s. Romiley’s home game against Bredbury on May 14th has been brought forward to Thursday, May 8th.   The table in this division will be devised by dividing the number of points gained by matches played as there is an uneven number of clubs and not all play the same number of games.

Unreported items from April 26th

IN the ECB Premiership, the little matter of a hat-trick taken by Alderley Edge’s Jason Whittaker was omitted when Widnes telephoned details of their club’s home defeat. Jason’s victims were Luke McCoy, Damien Moore and Tom Bromhead.  Widnes gained three points not four as first reported

Birkenhead Park failed to telephone the result of their First Division game against Bramhall until Sunday and it was not possible to send the result to the PA.  BP omitted the names of the not out batsmen from both sides on their result sheet.  All players taking part in matches must be recorded (umpires also please note). …Upton’s Ian Sharrock took 4-42 at Cheadle Hulme not 3-42 as telephoned …Andy Windsor took 4-33 for Didsbury at Poynton, not Andy Windsor as reported.

Ben Thomas scored 50 in Irby’s nine runs win at Burnage in Division Two.

Andy is fighting leukemia
Newsletter is grateful to Poynton Sports Club chairman Kevin Bell for the following contribution:

“Poynton’s popular and successful long-time 2nd XI skipper Andy McAlpine is fighting leukemia.  Andy had a great season in 2007 leading his team into the Premier division, then made a personal breakthrough into the 1st XI, a challenge he was looking forward to continuing this season.

Andy was then diagnosed late last year with a serious and  rare form of leukemia, he is continuing to have intensive treatment to which he is responding well.  Andy and his father Duncan are really important to everyone at Poynton Sports Club and we are sure everyone in the League will join us in wishing Andy a successful recovery.

We can’t wait to see you back on the cricket field, Andy”

HALE BARNS chairman Ian Bishop is in hospital in the UK after needing medical treatment after being badly bitten by mosquitos while on holiday in Greece.

And finally ………

AN elderly man walks into a confessional.  The following conversation ensues:

Man: “I’m 92 years old, have a wonderful wife of 70 years, many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Yesterday, I picked up two college girls hitch-hiking.  We went to a motel, where I had slept with each of them three times”.

Priest: “Are you sorry for your sins?”

 Man: “What sins?”

Priest: “ What kind of Catholic are you?”

 Man: “I’m Jewish”

Priest: “Why are you telling me all this then?”

 Man: I’m 92 years old … I’m telling everybody”.
